1. How to Distinguish Light-Duty and Heavy-Duty Pallets

Many procurement and warehouse staff judge pallets only by outer size. In fact, pallets of the same dimension are available in light-duty and heavy-duty grades. The core differences lie in weight, material thickness, structural rigidity, load capacity, rack compatibility and steel pipe adaptability, which are the key criteria for safe warehouse selection.

1.1 Weight and Material Thickness (Fast On-Site Judgment)

Under the same specification, pallet weight directly reflects material thickness and structural performance. Light-duty pallets adopt thin materials with light weight and flexible edges. Heavy-duty pallets use thick raw materials with heavier weight, higher hardness and stronger deformation resistance. Taking the common 1200×1000mm pallet as an example, light-duty pallets weigh 8–12kg, while heavy-duty models weigh 14–22kg.

1.2 Load Capacity (Core Judging Standard)

Load rating is the most authoritative standard to distinguish pallet grades, including dynamic load, static load and rack load. Rack load is the critical indicator for warehouse application.

Light-Duty Pallet: Dynamic load ≤500KG, static load ≤1000 KG, extremely low rack load, not allowed for elevated suspended storage.

Heavy-Duty Pallet: Dynamic load 1500–2000KG, static load 4000–6000KG. With embedded steel pipes, the rack load

reaches 1000KG, supporting long-term stable suspended storage, but it is not advisable to load full goods.

1.3 Structure and Application Scenarios

Light-duty pallets are mostly designed with nine-foot base or thin Chuan-shaped structure. With a simple structure, they are only suitable for floor stacking and flat storage of ordinary goods and transportation.

Heavy-duty pallets adopt thickened Chuan-shaped, field-shaped and double-sided reinforced structures with wide and solid main beams. They adapt to high-frequency forklift operation and standardized industrial warehousing.

1.4 Rack Application and Steel Pipe Installation Rules

Light-duty pallets are forbidden for elevated rack suspension use. Insufficient structural rigidity leads to bending and collapse under suspended load, causing cargo falling risks. Beside they can not add Steel tubes.

Heavy-duty pallets are compatible with all standard warehouse racks, including beam racks, drive-in racks and gravity racks. Embedded steel pipes are mandatory for elevated suspended storage, which greatly improves bending resistance and prevents structural deformation and cracking under long-term load.

2. Grid Deck vs Solid Deck Pallets: Structure and Application Differences

After confirming the load grade, users can select grid deck or solid deck pallets according to cargo characteristics and warehouse environment. The two structures serve different working conditions with independent application advantages.

2.1 Grid Deck Pallets

Grid deck pallets feature a hollow open surface with light weight and high permeability. They provide excellent ventilation and drainage performance, effectively avoiding water and dust accumulation, making them ideal for humid and dusty warehouse environments with high cost performance.

The hollow gaps are not suitable for fine particles, loose materials and ultra-thin soft-packed goods, which may cause leakage or sinking. The local pressure resistance is relatively weaker than solid deck pallets.

Application: General industrial goods storage, cold room warehousing, outdoor temporary placement, humid warehouse operation, food storage and medium & light-duty rack storage.

2.2 Solid Deck Pallets

news-504-449Solid deck pallets adopt an integrated seamless flat surface with uniform stress distribution and high structural rigidity. They deliver outstanding compression and impact resistance. The fully closed deck prevents cargo leakage and jamming, supports easy cleaning, meets dust-free workshop hygiene requirements, and ensures higher stability for high-level heavy-load storage.

The minor disadvantage is the heavier weight compared with grid pallets of the same size, together with weaker ventilation and drainage performance in closed humid environments.

Application: Dust-free clean workshops, pharmaceutical and food-grade warehousing, carton goods, fragile products, precision small parts and high-level heavy-load rack storage.

3. Quick Selection Guidelines

1. Light goods, floor storage and cost-sensitive projects: Choose light-duty grid pallets without steel pipes; elevated rack use is prohibited.

2. Heavy goods and long-term high-level rack storage: Choose steel-reinforced heavy-duty pallets with grid or solid deck as required.

3. Humid, dusty environments requiring ventilation and drainage: Prioritize grid deck pallets.

4. Clean workshops, fragile flat goods and fine material storage: Prioritize solid deck pallets.

4. Conclusion

Scientific pallet selection relies on matching load capacity, structure and actual working conditions. Light-duty pallets are cost-effective for conventional floor storage, while steel-reinforced heavy-duty pallets are the safe solution for high-level heavy-load rack warehousing. Grid and solid deck structures adapt to ventilated humid environments and clean high-precision scenarios respectively. All our pallets comply with global warehouse standards with stable structure and high durability. Custom specifications are available to help enterprises eliminate warehouse safety risks and improve operational efficiency.
